GRAND CANYON, EAST RIM

ARIZONA

MORNING
SKY

In the heart of the Grand Canyon lies Sipapu, the birth place of the Hopi. It is said that from the hidden womb of the Canyon, the Hopi people emerged from their underground world into the world of today.

They were met by Masa’au, the one who guarded and protected this surface world. After their emergence, the Hopi split into four groups and migrated in the Four Directions. After a distance, they all turned to the left, thus tracing out the sign of the Hopi migrations.

It is Yapa, the Mockingbird, who had the task of giving the languages to the four peoples of the Migration.

It is Masa’au who granted Mankind the privilege to live on this Earth.

It is Sotuknangu who protects the skies and links us to the stars.

It is Nangasohu who streaked in the dark night sky not so many years ago.

GRAND CANYON LEDGE

©
MORNING
SKY

The Grand Canyon keeps the birth-place of Sipapu hidden in its steep-walled canyons.

But so, too, the secrets and the mysteries of the ‘Ancient Ones’ are hidden away for safe keeping. A very old legend says that in the secret canyons are tracks of the pharaohs.

Be careful Seeker, the Grand Canyon is majesty and awe, but its sides and its canyons are dangerous for those who do not respect its power.

At the edge of the Grand Canyon, more than 1000 feet up, the Canyon calls to me to fly into her heart. Every rock and every pebble seeks to send you into flight.

My heart pounds with the excitement of the dance on the cliff’s edge.

Today I will not fly...

               ...today I will soar.

Ajo, ‘Ancient Ones’, Ajo!
