ELDON RUINS, ARIZONA

MORNING
SKY

You were the ancient people of Eldon, the ones who traded with the ones who came from north, east, south and west.

Then, about a thousand years ago, you stood and watched as the volcano to the north exploded in fire and thunder.

The world had changed.

Mother Earth had spoken in a loud voice and with great anger.

Children had heard the many stories about mountain fire; on that fateful day, they came true.

In this mountain land of snow in northern Arizona, Mother Earth and Father Sky reach out to each other.

In this land of snow, the Fire of the Sky and the Fire of the Earth are joined.

You were there...

You saw them.

It is one of the best known places in the Southwest. It is the home of the ‘Old Ones’, the Anasazi, who were also known as the ‘Cliff Dwellers’. It is Montezuma’s Castle (no, Montezuma never actually resided there).

Legends say that the ancient Anasazi suddenly left here. They left no traces, they left no tracks. Many have tried to explain their disappearance, I know of no explanation that has yet been accepted.

Why did they leave?

One old legend speaks of a powerful Shaman who had six fingers and who led the ‘Old Ones’ to a place near a volcano.

I do not know why. What I can say is that at Montezuma’s Castle, the ‘Old Ones’ can still be heard drumming late at night. Not far away, at Montezuma’s Well, you can see your future in its waters.
