TEPEYAC HILL
BERNARD DE SAHAGUN SAID OF THE TEPEYAC GODDESS: “IT APPEARS TO BE A SATANIC INVENTION TO CLOAK IDOLATRY UNDER THE CONFUSION OF THIS NAME TONANTZIN.”
HOWEVER, IN HIS EFFORTS TO CONVERT NATIVES, SAHAGUN OFTEN REFERRED TO THE LADY OF TEPEYAC AS BOTH MARY AND TONANTZIN AS LATE AS 1560.
THE SPANISH CONQUERORS CONSTRUCTED A CHAPEL DEDICATED TO THE VIRGIN MARY AT THAT VERY SITE. THEY REPLACED THE AZTEC MOTHER GODDESS WITH THE SPANISH MOTHER GODDESS...

...OR AT LEAST THEY TRIED.
